A life at the helm of major decisions
Juan Villalonga Navarro was born in Madrid on 8 April 1953 into a family with a long business tradition. A graduate in Law and Economics from the University of Deusto with an MBA from IESE, he spent almost two decades in strategy consulting and investment banking before becoming chairman of Telefónica in June 1996.
His years at the head of the company coincided with its privatisation and with the birth of the internet as a business. In just four years Telefónica gained scale in Latin America through Operation Verónica, created Terra Networks and moved into content with the acquisition of Endemol.
Since then he has invested in and led telecommunications and internet ventures in several countries and has sat on boards in Europe and the Americas. Today he explores the frontier between leadership and artificial intelligence.
